Review of Autumn Concert
The Autumn concert gave the college's various choirs and ensembles their first opportunity of the year to showcase their work. Although many of the performers are taking A level music, most groups draw in a large number of students from across the college, not least the ninety-strong choir, which sang the lusty favourite Rhythm of Life alongside Gabriel Faure's serene Cantique de Jean Racine. This stylistic contrast was typical of a concert that covered a wide range of genres from Early Music Group's sixteenth century offerings, through String Orchestra's rendition of Mozart and Tchaikovsky through to the Jazz and Soul numbers that opened each half. The evening was also very varied in terms of the size of the ensembles: our large and exuberant main choir was complemented by the much smaller chamber choir, who sang a madrigal about an owl by Thomas Vautor, while the exuberant massed ranks of Wind Band was set against a beautifully sensitive performance of Mozart's Quartet for Flute and Strings. The highlight of the evening was the final item, in which the college's Symphony Orchestra played an impressive rendition of Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King. The recording of this is now available to students on Moodle.
